Tips for Decorating your Living Room

June 11, 2015 Judy McLean
Accent colors

Having a hard time deciding on an accent color? Start by finding a painting to put over your sofa to create a focal point. Then pull the colors from the painting and use them in your toss cushions, accessories, side panels and throws.

Coffee table accessories

Not sure what to put on your coffee table? Look at layering trays and different bowls. Mix it up when you are looking for things to put in the bowls. Try mixing different textures by combining colored balls, foliage, organic materials and metals.

Wall decor

Having a difficult time finding wall decor that goes together in a space? Look at mixing art, mirrors, clocks and metal art so that it is not just one painting after another. Just having paintings in a room can make the space feel busy and visually heavy.

Adding foliage to your space

Does your space feel like it's missing something? Try adding plants; sometimes a room just needs a touch of green, something living to give it a breath of fresh air. Don't have a green thumb? Take a look around, there are some great fake plants that look nothing like your grandma's silk flowers. Perhaps your room is too monochromatic for you. In this case, add some pops of color inexpensively through toss cushions and accessories.

Small changes, big impact

Want to freshen up your space without breaking the bank?If you have good bones to start with, try rearranging your furniture, declutter some of the small "nic nacs" that we all tend to collect and look at changing the lighting by adding table or floor lamps. Then look at changing out your accent cushions and adding a vase or two with fresh flowers. These are small changes that can make a big impact!
